Got a tree blocking light or dropping dead branches? Crown thinning opens the canopy for more light and airflow, and deadwooding removes unsafe dead wood. I keep the shape natural and leave everything tidy.

  • Let more light through the canopy without a harsh reduction

  • Dead branches removed to reduce risk over lawns, paths, drives and roofs

What is crown thinning and deadwooding?

Crown thinning is selective pruning to reduce how dense the canopy is, so more daylight gets through and the tree catches less wind. Deadwooding is removing dead, broken, or unsafe branches that can fall or keep shedding into the garden. Done properly, it keeps the tree looking natural — it doesn’t leave it “lion-tailed” or hacked back.

  • Thinning overcrowded crowns to brighten lawns, patios and garden rooms

  • Dead branch removal over drives, footpaths, sheds, fences and conservatory roofs

  • Removing crossing, rubbing or weakly-attached limbs that cause future problems

  • Tidying storm-damaged branches and hanging deadwood after high winds

  • Reducing leaf and twig drop (where density is the main cause)

  • Sensible pruning to keep a balanced shape — not stripping one side bare

Common crown thinning and deadwooding jobs I do

Before any pruning, I check access, what’s underneath the tree, and what’s nearby — including roofs, fences, power lines, greenhouses, parked cars and footpaths. Some trees are protected by a TPO or sit in a conservation area, so permission may be needed before work starts. I’ll tell you what applies and help you check with the local council. Work is kept controlled and tidy, with neighbours in mind.

How Pricing Works

I don’t publish prices online because every tree is different. I quote in person after checking the tree size, access, what’s around it, and the safest way to do the work. You’ll get a clear fixed price before any work starts.
