A stump can get in the way of mowing, planting or simply using a corner of the garden. Cutting it close to the ground leaves the solid base of the tree in place.
A stump grinder breaks that wood into small pieces. It works down into the stump to the agreed depth, instead of digging out the whole root system across the garden.

The right grinding depth depends on the intended result. Tell us your plans before the work is priced, especially if someone else will be landscaping afterwards.
A new planting space
A new plant needs room for its roots. Share what you hope to plant and where, so we can consider the width as well as the depth of grinding. Remaining roots and the condition of the ground may affect the options.
Paving, posts or further work
If another contractor needs a particular area or depth clear, let us know before the quote. Grinding the visible stump alone does not establish that the ground is ready for a foundation, post hole or new surface.
Getting to the stump
The route in matters.
The stump may be small, but the machine still needs to reach it and have room to work. Show us the whole route from the road or driveway, including the tightest point.
A photo of a wide gate alone does not show a sharp turn, steps or a narrow passage beyond it. Those details help us judge access and explain what is practical.

Send the narrowest clear width, plus photos of steps, slopes, tight corners and the route over lawns or paving. Access needs checking for the machine used on the job.

Fences, walls, sheds, paths and neighbouring planting can affect the working space and how much of the stump is accessible.

Tell us about known cables, pipes, drains or other buried services near the stump. Their position must be considered before grinding; a surface photo cannot establish what is underground.
What affects the price?
Size is only
part of the job.
Send a close view of the stump and a wider photo showing what is around it. An approximate measurement across the widest part is more useful than calling it small or large.
If there are several stumps, include them all in the enquiry. Access, the work below ground and the finish you want all affect the quote.

Can you grind a stump left by somebody else?
Yes, you can ask us to quote for an existing stump even if Sharp Hedges did not remove the tree. Send its approximate width and height, a photo of the surrounding space and details of the route into the garden. Let us know about any other stumps at the same time.
How far below ground will you grind?
The depth is agreed for the job, taking account of what you want to do with the area, access and anything near or beneath the stump. Preparing for planting can need a different extent of work from taking a stump below a lawn. We do not promise one depth for every site or removal of all the roots.
Will the tree grow back after grinding?
Regrowth can depend on the type of tree and the roots left in the ground. Some trees can send up new shoots from remaining roots, so grinding is not a blanket guarantee against regrowth. Tell us if shoots have already appeared and, if you know it, what kind of tree was removed.
What if the stump is close to a wall or fence?
Show us how close it is and whether any roots run beneath the boundary or paving. The machine needs room to work as well as a route to reach the stump. Nearby structures and known buried services can limit the area that can be ground, so these details need checking before the scope is agreed.
Does the quote include taking away the grindings?
We agree the finish when quoting. Grinding leaves a mixture of chipped wood and soil. Tell us whether you want material left in the area or removed, and whether you have further garden work planned. Removal, replacement soil and making good should never be assumed to be included unless they are part of the agreed quote.
Do I need to remove the whole tree first?
Stump grinding is the work after the tree has been cut down. If the tree is still standing, tell us you need both tree removal and stump grinding so the two parts can be considered together. If it has already gone, we can look at the remaining stump as a separate job.
