Straight lines matter, but so does knowing what to take off and what to leave.
We aim for a clean top, even faces and a sensible shape without cutting harder than the hedge can tolerate. When the cutting is finished, the clippings are cleared from the hedge, paths, lawns and surrounding area.

The right type of cut
Not every overgrown hedge needs a hard reduction. Sometimes a careful trim is enough. Other hedges have gained so much height or width that they need more substantial work.
For hedges already close to the size you want.
We remove the new growth, straighten the top and faces and bring the hedge back to a clean shape. Regular cutting is usually the easiest way to keep established hedges dense and manageable.
For hedges that have become too tall, bulky or dominant.
A reduction removes substantially more growth than a maintenance trim. Before cutting, we look at the species, condition and amount of live growth so we can explain what can realistically be achieved.
For long runs, tall conifers and hedges that have been left for several seasons.
These jobs often involve more access planning, heavier cutting and significantly more waste. We have professional equipment for larger hedge work and base the quote on the full job rather than guessing from the length alone.
Worth knowing before we cut
A trim mainly removes recent growth. A reduction takes considerably more height or bulk from the hedge.
That difference matters because hedge species respond differently to harder cutting.

Species-specific advice
With Leylandii and most other conifer hedges, the sides normally need to stay within healthy green growth.
Cut too far back into old brown or leafless wood and it may not grow back, leaving permanent bare areas. If a conifer hedge has been allowed to become very wide, there can therefore be a limit to how narrow it can sensibly be made.
Height reductions are often possible, but the amount that should come off depends on the hedge and its condition.
We would rather explain those limits before starting than promise a result the hedge cannot produce.

We confirm what is being cut, the finished height or shape and any access issues before getting started.
Where useful, we sheet or protect beds, paths and surrounding areas to make collecting the cuttings cleaner and easier.
The hedge is trimmed or reduced using professional equipment, with the line and shape checked as the job progresses rather than simply racing from one end to the other.
Loose clippings are cleared from the hedge and surrounding area, paths and hard surfaces are blown down and the agreed green waste is taken away.

Yes. Large hedge reductions and overgrown hedges are a major part of our work. We look at the species, height, width, access and the amount you want removed before recommending the sensible way to tackle it.
Often, yes. Height reductions are possible on many established Leylandii hedges, but the amount that should be removed depends on the hedge and its condition. We’ll explain the sensible finished height before starting.
Most conifers, including Leylandii, do not reliably regrow from old brown or leafless wood. That is why an overgrown conifer cannot always be made dramatically narrower without leaving permanent bare areas.
It depends on the species, growth rate and the finish you want. Many established garden hedges are maintained once or twice a year, while faster-growing hedges may need more frequent attention to keep them at a consistent size.
Yes. Green waste from the agreed hedge work can be cleared and removed as part of the job. We’ll confirm what is included when we quote.
Active wild bird nests are protected by law. The main nesting period is usually considered to be from March to August, although birds can nest outside those months. If an active nest would be affected by the work, that part of the hedge has to be left until it is safe to continue.
