What is crown reduction?

Crown reduction isn’t topping or random cutting. Done properly, it’s selective pruning that reduces the canopy while keeping a natural shape. The aim is better clearance and balance, without long stubs or torn-out limbs.

  • I assess the tree, what’s underneath, and what level of reduction is sensible

  • Cuts are made back to suitable growth points where possible

  • The reduction is kept even for a natural finish

  • All arisings are removed, or logs can be left stacked if you prefer

Recent crown reduction work

Before and after — a tidy crown reduction to improve clearance while keeping a natural shape.

Before (left) / After (right)

These get mixed up all the time. I’ll explain what each one does and what suits your tree and your reason for pruning.

  • Crown reduction: reduces overall height and spread while keeping the shape

  • Crown thinning: reduces density to let more light and wind through (size stays similar)

  • Crown lifting: removes lower limbs for clearance over paths, drives, gardens and roads

  • If you need clearance rather than size control, see Crown Lifting. If you want more light but not a smaller tree, see Crown Thinning.

Crown reduction vs thinning vs lifting

Some trees are protected by a TPO or sit in a conservation area, so permission may be needed before work starts. I’ll tell you what applies and help you check with the local council. Every job is planned around safety — especially near neighbours, footpaths, parked cars, sheds, fences and other nearby structures.

How Pricing Works

I don’t publish prices online because every tree is different. I quote in person after checking the tree size, access, what’s underneath, and the safest way to do the work. You’ll get a clear fixed price before any work starts.
