Planning your garden work

Turf or artificial grass?

Start with how you want to use the garden and the care you are happy to give it. Neither option makes preparation or ongoing upkeep disappear.

Ask about your garden

Two different surfaces, not one universal winner.

Natural turf

A living lawn that grows and changes with the seasons. It suits someone who wants real grass and is prepared to mow, water when needed and care for worn areas.

New turf needs time and suitable care to establish. Plan around that before expecting it to handle regular use. Shade, soil and wear all matter when assessing the area.

Artificial grass

A manufactured surface that does not need mowing. It can suit a defined area where avoiding lawn growth and mowing is a priority, but it is not maintenance-free.

Leaves, dirt and pet mess still need attention. Ask about the product’s cleaning guidance, how the area drains, edge details and its eventual replacement. It does not provide the same living surface as grass.

Look underneath the finished surface.

Covering a rough, wet or uneven patch does not explain why it is that way. We need to assess the existing ground, levels and intended use before agreeing preparation. Do not assume a new surface will solve a drainage problem.

For turf

The ground needs suitable soil preparation and an agreed finish. Existing vegetation, buried material, soil condition and levels may need work before the turf is laid. Ask what preparation and materials are included, not just how many rolls will arrive.

For artificial grass

The base, drainage approach, edging and joins matter as much as the grass you see. Discuss the existing surface and any changes in level, and ask how the chosen system will be prepared and fixed.

Five useful things to tell us.

  • What is there now: an old lawn, bare soil, paving or overgrowth.
  • How you hope to use the space, including pets or regular play.
  • Anything you have noticed about standing water, uneven areas or heavy wear.
  • The route in: gates, steps, parking and where materials can be carried.
  • Any other work planned, such as clearing overgrowth or renewing fencing.

A wide photo and a view of the access are useful if they are easy to take safely. Photos and measurements are optional; we can discuss what needs checking on a visit.

Compare the complete quote and the care afterwards.

Compare removal of the old surface, ground preparation, supplied materials, levels, edges, waste and any separately quoted work. The cheapest surface price alone does not tell you the installed cost.

With turf, ask about watering, when to start using the lawn and the first cut. With artificial grass, ask about brushing, cleaning and care for the particular product. The RHS guide to laying and establishing turf explains why preparation and early care matter.

Sharp Hedges offers both services. You do not have to choose before getting in touch — tell us about the area and what you want from it.
