The first decision
Removal is not
a harder trim.
A reduction keeps a living hedge and brings its height or spread under control. Removal is for a boundary that needs to come out, either as a complete run or as a clearly defined section.
If the hedge is simply too tall or wide, hedge cutting and reduction may preserve useful screening. If it is in the way of a new layout, repeatedly failing or no longer wanted, a removal quote should deal with the plant, the waste and the finish below it.

What happens at ground level
Cutting the hedge down, dealing with the bases and excavating roots are not the same thing. The quote should say what work is practical and what will remain below ground.
What replaces the boundary
A hedge can be providing privacy, shelter or separation. If you plan to install fencing or replant, tell us early so the sequence and required finish can be discussed.

Access, walls, fences, paving and nearby planting can all affect how removal is approached. You do not need to work all of that out before getting in touch.

The density and maturity of the hedge, the number of woody stems and the working room all affect the job. The finish at the base can be just as important as the growth above it.
We price the agreed work rather than assuming that “removal” means the same result on every boundary.

Can you remove part of a hedge rather than the whole run?
Yes, ask us to look at the exact section you want removed and what should remain. The cut end, access and the stability or condition of neighbouring plants all need to be considered before the work is agreed.
Are the roots included in hedge removal?
Do not assume they are. Cutting out the hedge, removing the woody bases and excavating every root are different levels of work. Root spread, nearby paving, walls, services and access can limit what is practical. We make the agreed ground-level finish clear in the quote.
Could the hedge grow back?
That depends on the plant and how the base is treated. Some hedging plants can regrow from a remaining stump or root system. Tell us whether stopping regrowth is important so the appropriate options can be discussed rather than relying on cutting alone.
Can a hedge be removed beside a wall or fence?
Often it can, but the boundary needs checking first. Stems and roots may be tight against masonry, posts, paving or neighbouring planting. A photo can help with the initial conversation if you have one, and a site visit may be needed before the method and finish are confirmed.
Will you take the hedge waste away?
The handling of branches, foliage and woody material is agreed as part of the quote. Tell us what you would like removed and we can assess the practical details with you.
Can you install fencing after the hedge is removed?
Sharp Hedges also provides garden fencing. If a new boundary is the end goal, ask for both services together. The hedge-removal finish, post positions and any remaining roots need to be considered before the fencing work is planned.
