Clip it back into shape
For conifers and evergreen shrubs that are still healthy but have gone fluffy, a careful clip within the green growth restores a clean dome, ball or straight line without leaving bare patches.

Shape, not just a trim
A lot of Chester-le-Street gardens have established planting: big conifers either side of a drive, clipped shrubs along a wall, a long evergreen hedge that screens the back garden. They look great kept in shape and quickly look tired when they are not.
That is the work we do most here. We clip conifers back into clean domes, reduce hedges that have crept up and out, and reshape features like archways so they work again. Two of our Chester-le-Street jobs are below.
If the garden needs more than hedge work, we can prune or remove trees, grind stumps and clear overgrown areas on the same visit. Tell us everything you have in mind and we will quote the jobs together.
Recent jobs in Chester-le-Street
Two of our jobs in the town from summer 2025, photographed before we started and when we finished.

Chester-le-Street · June 2025
These conifers in a Chester-le-Street front garden had grown loose and shaggy and were starting to swallow the wall and the drive. We clipped them back into two tight, matching domes, working within the green growth so they stay full, and took all the cuttings away.

Chester-le-Street · June 2025
A tall evergreen hedge with an archway through it had lost its lines, with lumps of growth hiding the opening. We cut the top and faces back level, squared up the arch and tidied the shrubs either side so the way through the garden is clear again.
Overgrown conifers and shrubs
The right answer depends on what the plant is and how far it has gone. We will tell you straight on the visit.

Hedge trimming and reductionsBroadleaf hedges can usually be reduced hard and will recover. Conifers only regrow from green growth, so we agree how far we can go before we start rather than leave you with brown wood.
Overgrown hedge optionsWhen a hedge or shrub has grown too far gone, removal with the roots dealt with is sometimes the better answer, with fencing or new planting to follow if you want it.

Yes. Domes, balls and clipped tops are a regular job for us, like the two conifers shown above. Conifers do not regrow from bare wood, so we shape them within the green growth and agree the finished size with you first.
Only as far as there is green growth to cut back to. Cut into brown, bare wood and most conifers stay brown. On the visit we will show you where the green stops and agree a height and width that will still look right.

Cutting a garden hedge does not normally need permission. Trees can be protected by a Tree Preservation Order or sit in a conservation area, which means checking with Durham County Council first. Our protected-tree helper shows you how, and we can look into it on the visit.
Yes, when it is part of the quote. Most customers ask us to remove the green waste, and we will agree that before we start so there are no surprises on the day.
