Hedges first
Washington was laid out with hedges everywhere: low ones along open-plan fronts, tall ones screening back gardens, long runs beside the footpaths that link the villages. Kept in shape they make the place; left for a couple of seasons they swallow the path and block the light.
Cutting them back straight and level is our bread and butter, and Washington sits right in the middle of where we work, between Chester-le-Street, Sunderland and Gateshead. See a front hedge we cut just across the A19 below.
Need more than a hedge trim? We prune and remove trees, clear overgrown gardens and replace fencing, and we will quote the jobs together if that is easier for you.

Town End Farm, Sunderland · May 2025
This front hedge had grown out into a soft green blob under the tree, pushing over the wall and onto the pavement. We cut the faces back square, levelled the top and tidied the ends, then cleared the cuttings from the garden and the path. It is the same job we do on front hedges across Washington’s estates.
Before we quote
A hedge quote is quicker and more accurate when we know what you are dealing with. None of this needs measuring; a sentence or a photo of each is plenty.

Once or twice a year suits most hedges, with conifers usually once. We do not run regular maintenance rounds, but you are welcome to book us again when it needs doing.
Often, yes. Most broadleaf hedges recover well from a hard cut. Conifers do not regrow from bare wood, so with those we agree how far we can go on the visit rather than leave you with brown patches.
It can be. If a hedge grows out over a public footpath, the council can ask for it to be cut back. We cut the face back in line with your boundary and clear the path as we go.
Yes. Hedge removal and fencing are quoted as separate items, so you can see what each part costs and decide whether to do both.
Washington is covered by Sunderland City Council, which keeps the records of Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas. Our protected-tree helper shows you how to check, and we can look into it on the visit before any tree work starts.
